Low in the south on July nights, dragging its hooked tail through the haze, the scorpion watches for boasts. Not to punish them, that work is done, but the way a scar watches for knives, knowingly. Its heart-star glows like a coal that remembers the fire. If you've been all sting lately, it understands. If you've been all swagger, it has a story for you. Mostly it teaches the mercy of distance, that you and the person you can't forgive can both be honored, in the same sky, at different hours.
