A reading-room window onto the sky
Mystic Cards
A Mystic Card takes the constellation riding highest over you right now, where you stand, and hands you the old Greek myth behind its name, painted in our own hand, with the constellation's realstars laid over it in their true positions. Draw what's near, or draw at random.
It isn't a fortune. It's an invitation, sit with an ancient story for a minute and notice what it echoes in your own week. The constellation overhead changes through the night and the seasons; or pick any of the 33 below.

Arcas
the bear-driver
Arcas was a good hunter, and the bear in front of him was a clean shot. He raised the spear. He could not know the bear was his mother, Callisto, changed years ago and unable to say so, only able to stand there looking at him with eyes that remembered his birth weight. The worst thing in the world was one motion away and he didn't even know it was the worst thing. That's how close we all live to it, sometimes. The sky intervened. Not every sky does, so this one gets remembered.
The disaster that didn't happen deserves a quiet thank-you tonight.
