Upright

A figure stands blindfolded and loosely bound, ringed by eight blades stuck point-down in soft ground, a far stone house glowing on the hill. The Eight of Swords is the trap that lives mostly in your own head. The mud is unguarded, the cloth over your eyes is slipping, and look, there is space between every blade. The card doesn't tell you that you feel free. It just holds the candle to the gaps.

Reversed

Drawn reversed, the blindfold falls away and the blades lean back to let you pass, the cage suddenly a door. New eyes, a slow walk out of a story that had you. But it can also be a warning, the trap closes only because you keep stepping back inside it, and each gap is still a choice.

In the imagery

By low candlelight a blindfolded figure stands loosely tied in a ring of eight blades driven into the soft earthen floor, a far stone house warm on the hill behind. The binding is loose, the cloth slips, and the gold light shows wide dark spaces between every blade. The hearth-warm glow on the gaps is the whole point, the door was never as shut as the dark made it feel.
