work with the cycle

Moon Rituals by Phase

You don't have to believe the moon pulls your life the way it pulls the tide to find its rhythm useful. Four phases, four moods, a simple cadence of begin, build, honor, release, that gives a month some shape. Tonight's phase is marked below.

Not sure where she is? Check tonight's moon.

New Moon

plant in the dark

☾ tonight

The sky is empty and the slate is clean. This is the phase for intention, for naming what you want before there's any light to show it. Keep it private; a seed does its first work underground.

  • Sit somewhere quiet and write one clear intention for the cycle ahead.
  • Say it once, out loud, then fold the paper and put it away.
  • Light a candle for the length of the writing, and let that be the whole of it.

Waxing Moon

feed what's growing

From the first sliver to just before full, the light builds, and so does whatever you started. This is the half for action, the small daily brick, the push while the sky is on your side.

  • Each night, take one concrete step toward the new-moon intention.
  • Tend a real plant alongside it, the watering keeps the metaphor honest.
  • Notice resistance without obeying it; the waxing moon rewards the steady hand.

Full Moon

see it in full light

The moon is at her brightest and so is everything you set in motion, the good and the overgrown both. This is the phase for gratitude, for celebration, and for seeing clearly what has come to fruit.

  • Name aloud what has ripened since the new moon, and give it thanks.
  • Charge water or a stone on a windowsill in the moonlight overnight.
  • Let yourself feel things fully tonight; the full moon turns the volume up, so let it crest.

Waning Moon

let the light give back

The light draws down toward dark. This is the half for release and repair, for clearing what you no longer carry and forgiving what's run its course, so the next new moon meets you with open hands.

  • Write down one thing to release, then safely burn or tear the paper.
  • Clear a literal space, a drawer, a shelf, to match the inner clearing.
  • Rest more than you think you should; the dark is coming and it's allowed.
None of this commands anything. The moon is a clock you can feel, and a ritual is just a way of keeping an appointment with your own intentions.

Find your natal moon, see the lunar calendar, or make a sigil for your intention.
