Dreaming of Basement
Two traditional perspectives
These are symbolic interpretations from different traditions, not facts about your life or forecasts. Your associations may be different.
Artemidorus · Oneirocritica
To descend into a sound cellar with full stores foretells reserves greater than you reckoned, savings, allies, provisions. What is drawn up from below the house denotes profit from an unregarded source.
A dark, foul, or flooded cellar warns of rot at the base of the household, or matters hidden by others under your own roof. Look beneath the surface of an affair that seems to stand well.
Jungian · the collective unconscious
The basement is the personal unconscious, the room under the house of you where everything unlooked-at was carried down. Going in with a light means the shadow work is underway, and what you find, old furniture, a person, a live animal, is a part of yourself awaiting the stairs.
A basement door you nail shut is repression by hand, and the dream will keep sending noises up through the floor until you open it. Water rising below means what was buried has gone from stored to rising.
a few quiet questions
A gentle guided reflection
Start wherever you like and skip anything that does not fit. Your notes stay in this page while it is open. They are not sent or saved automatically, and leave with the page when you close or reload it.
To keep your reflection, copy it and paste it into your dream journal (opens in a new tab). Saving there is your choice and requires an account. You can also paste it into your own notebook or notes app.
There is room for the whole story
