Hildegard von Bingen ยท twelfth-century lapidary
Crystal Pairing
The medieval pharmacopeia treated stones the way it treated herbs โ written down, prescribed, warmed in oil or wine. We quote Hildegard's Physica where her recommendations match; where they don't, the modern reading takes over.

Howlite
white with grey veins
Hildegard: Howlite is modern, but the white stones โ chalk, alabaster, milk-quartz โ were used in the medieval cloisters under the pillows of novices who could not sleep. A stone the color of moon-on-linen.
Now: Slows the inner voice. Keep one on the nightstand; some people prefer it cool, in a glass of water.

milky with rainbow sheen
Hildegard: Hildegard's lapidary does not list moonstone by that name but speaks of selenite โ light-of-the-moon โ held to the chest to ease night terrors.
Now: Carries the tide. A stone for those whose sleep tracks the lunar cycle without their permission.
