All winter he rises in the east after supper and hunts nothing. That is the strange mercy of it, the great hunter finally off duty, the dog star trailing at his heel, the scorpion kept on the far side of the year so they never share a night. He watches the people who go out anyway, cold hands, breath showing, the ones who look up. If you have ever felt too big for your life or too loud for your room, he was too. Stand in the yard a minute. He makes good company.
