Cetus
the sea-monster
Cetus never asked to be the punishment. Poseidon shaped it, aimed it, and let it go the way you loose an arrow, and the arrow does not get a vote. It swam toward the girl on the rock because that was the errand, huge, scaled, slow as weather. Then a young man held up a dead thing's face and the monster's whole momentum turned to stone mid-lunge. Ended before finishing, that's its entire biography. The sky keeps it anyway, drifting through the dim autumn water of the stars, the sent thing, finally unsent.
You survived the almost, mark it somehow, then stop rehearsing it.
