Upright

An old man on a mountain, alone, holding a lantern. Inside the lantern, a six-pointed star. The Hermit is the moment you walk away from the noise to see what you actually think. Solitude isn't withdrawal in this card — it's pilgrimage. You went up because you needed to. The light is small but it's yours. Sit with whatever you've been too busy to feel. The answer is coming, and it's coming in your own voice.

Reversed

The lantern blown out, or never lit. The Hermit reversed is isolation that's stopped being chosen — loneliness, withdrawal, the door that locks from the inside. Sometimes it's the opposite: you've been so deep in your own head you've forgotten the world is out there waiting. The card asks you to come down the mountain, or to climb it on purpose. Either is better than the half-life of hiding.

In the imagery

A robed figure stands alone on a mountain peak under a gray sky. He holds a tall staff in one hand and a lantern in the other; inside the lantern burns a six-pointed star, the Seal of Solomon — wisdom that is older than him. His head is bowed. His robe is gray. There is no city, no companion, no light but his own.
