Upright

Soft grain, a river behind her, a crown of stars, twelve of them. The Empress is the part of the world that grows because something is loving it. Yourself included. This card is plenty — not the kind you earn, the kind that arrives because the conditions are right. Sit in your body for a minute. Notice the warmth where it lives. That's her. The work is to let yourself be enough of a garden that something can root in you.

Reversed

Plenty turned to clinging, or to neglect — both. The Empress reversed is the mother who can't stop helping or who's forgotten to. Creatively it's the project you keep over-watering, or the one you've stopped tending. Sometimes the card asks: have you been nurturing everyone but yourself? Other times: are you holding so tightly the thing can't grow? Loosen one hand. Use the other to feed yourself first.

In the imagery

A crowned figure reclines on cushions in a field of grain, a heart-shaped shield with the symbol of Venus at her side. Twelve stars circle her head — the months, the signs, the cycles. A waterfall behind her, evergreen trees, ripe wheat. Her robe is patterned with pomegranates. Everything is in fruit. Everything is in season.
