Upright
A horned figure on a black throne, a man and a woman in chains at his feet. Look at the chains. They're loose. You could lift them off. The Devil is what you've been telling yourself you couldn't leave — the job, the relationship, the substance, the version of you you've outgrown. The card doesn't shame you for being there. It just shows you the loop. The question now is whether you keep choosing it or finally take the iron off.
Reversed
The chains coming off. The Devil reversed is the moment you realize the bondage was self-made and walk out the door. Recovery, release, the slow unhooking. It can also be the warning right before you make the choice to keep the chain on a little longer. Either way, awareness has arrived. You see the loop now. What you do with that is up to you.
In the imagery
A great horned figure with bat wings and inverted pentagram on its forehead crouches on a black throne or altar. A naked man and woman are chained loosely at the neck — but their chains are wide enough to slip off. The man has a flame at the tip of his tail. The woman, grapes. They both have small horns of their own. They've started to resemble what bound them.
