We come to the table, often, looking for answers. A clear path. A resounding yes or no. We lay out the cloth, shuffle with intention, and watch the cards fall, each one a promise of a story about to unfold.
But what happens when they don't? When you look at the spread, and the images feel flat, the symbols opaque, the usual current between your hand and the pasteboard gone quiet? There's a particular kind of stillness in that moment, a feeling not of blockage, but of a different sort of invitation.

It’s tempting to shuffle again, to pull another card, to try and force the meaning into being. But in those silences, I've found a different kind of wisdom. It's the space between the cards, the space around them, that sometimes holds the truest mirror. When a spread feels unreadable, sometimes it means the question itself isn't ripe yet. Or perhaps the answer isn't meant to be a spoken word, but a felt sensation.
Think of it like tending a garden. You plant a seed, and sometimes it sprouts quickly, pushing green towards the sun. Other times, it sits, gathering its strength underground, sending out roots you cannot see. Would you dig it up, demanding it show itself? Or would you trust the soil, the water, the quiet work happening beneath the surface?
The cards are a language, yes, but not always a loud one. Sometimes they whisper, sometimes they gesture. And sometimes, they hold perfectly still, like a deer in the woods that has sensed your presence, waiting for you to slow your own breath before it moves. In these moments, the reading isn't about deciphering a message from the cards, but about listening to the stillness they create within you.
What does your chest do when the spread is silent? Does it tighten? Does it sigh? What thought, unbidden, drifts to the surface of your mind? Often, these are the true messages. The cards have done their work by simply creating the quiet, the pause, the moment where your own inner knowing can finally be heard above the usual clamor.
So, the next time your spread feels unreadable, don't dismiss it. Sit with the silence. Let the unmoving images become a space for reflection, rather than a puzzle to solve. The deepest knowing often resides not in the answer, but in the gentle question you ask yourself when the world, and even the cards, fall still. It’s a moment to simply , to let the iron in your veins settle, to feel the dust of understanding begin to gather on something true.
