The Sweet Decay: Tarot and the Turning of Leaves

The air shifts, just subtly. The light lowers itself a little, a deeper gold pooling at the edges of the window panes. My hands, after a summer of reaching for sun-warmed things, find themselves drawn to the cool weight of the ceramic mug, the slow swirl of steam from a cup of bitter tea. It is the season of turning, of letting go.

We often talk about tarot as a tool for growth, for revelation, for moving forward. And it is. But there’s also a deep, quiet conversation to be had with the cards about release, about the necessary surrender. The way a leaf, vibrant green all summer, softens into ochre and russet, then loosens its hold on the branch. It doesn't fight. It simply falls, adding itself back to the soil, a promise of future growth in its own decay.

The Hermit's Lantern in Autumn Dusk

I find myself reaching for The Hermit more often in these late days of summer, on the cusp of autumn. He carries his lantern, not to illuminate a new path forward, but often to shine a light on what needs to be seen before it's left behind. He doesn't rush. He watches the shadows lengthen, observes the dust motes dancing in the last beams of afternoon light.

When this card appears now, it doesn't always feel like a call to retreat, but rather an invitation to a gentle inventory. What have you been carrying that no longer serves the shape of your soul? What habits, what beliefs, what expectations, are ready to fall away like those leaves? This isn't about judgment, not a demanding discard. It's simply an observation, a quiet naming of things ready for the earth.

Composting Our Truths

Think of the way a garden bed is cleared at the end of the season. The spent stalks, the withered blooms, they aren't failures. They are simply done with their cycle. They are gathered, and they become compost. They break down. They nourish.

Our tarot practice can be a form of composting our truths. A difficult reading, a persistent shadow card, a recurring challenge that the cards keep pointing to – these aren't problems to be fixed immediately with aggressive action. Sometimes they are simply the spent stalks. The cards are asking us to acknowledge them, perhaps even thank them for the lessons they held, and then allow them to decay. To return to the earth of our being, to become fertile ground for what comes next.

There's a particular hush that comes with the turning of the season, a gentle permission to slow down, to look inward not with an agenda, but with curiosity. What are you willing to let fall, knowing that the soil will receive it, knowing that nothing truly vanishes, only transforms? Sit with that. Let the soft light of the Hermit’s lantern guide you to those places of quiet letting go. And perhaps, brew yourself a bitter tea to mark the occasion.
