The Edges of the Frame: What We Don't See

It’s easy to focus on the cards, to let their vibrant colors and ancient figures fill the eye, to grasp at the words they whisper. We look for meaning in the Knight’s purposeful stride, the Empress’s full embrace, the Chariot’s determined push. And that’s good, that’s right. That’s why we lay them out, after all.

But a reading, like a photograph, has edges. There’s a frame, and beyond that frame, the world continues, vibrant and breathing. Often, the most potent insights aren't in the cards themselves, but in those quiet, un-drawn spaces, the questions unasked, the stories untold, the breath held just outside the circle.

The Space Between

When we lay cards, we create a landscape. There are mountains and valleys, rivers and crossroads. Each card is a feature. But what about the air between them? The ground they rest upon? The silence that allows each voice to be heard? This is the unseen, the un-carded, where much of the real work of self-inquiry takes root.

Consider the gaps. The card drawn for 'current challenge' might be the Five of Pentacles, speaking of lack, of being outside. But what about the card not drawn, the one that speaks of comfort, of belonging? What does its absence tell us? Or the card drawn for 'what is needed' – perhaps the Queen of Swords, clear, sharp, unyielding. What of the softness she isn't bringing, or the vulnerability she asks us to set aside, for now? The edges of the frame. The story that is not on the table, but is humming just outside it.

The Unspoken Question

Sometimes, a reading feels… flat. We’ve asked a question, pulled the cards, and the answer feels thin, a silk thread rather than a sturdy rope. In these moments, it’s rarely the cards that are at fault. They are simply reflecting the question back to us, often revealing its own narrowness. The truth is, we rarely ask the real question first.

The real question is usually hiding beneath the surface, a soft thing, a vulnerable thing, a fear. We ask, "Will I get the job?" when the deeper question is, "Am I worthy of success?" We ask, "Will they come back?" when the heart is truly aching with, "Can I survive this loss?" The cards can only answer what we ask, but in their answer, they often highlight the deeper, un-vocalized inquiry that hums beneath the surface.

Sit with your spread. Not just with the symbols and their traditional meanings, but with the air around them. What feels present in its absence? What question is trying to form itself in the quiet between your breaths? What story are you not looking at, but feel stirring in your chest? This is where the earth of the reading truly settles, where the roots go deep. These are the edges of the frame, and they hold as much truth as the picture itself. Here is something to breathe into.
