Two traditions of dream reading

Dream Journal

Write what you remember of a dream below. We will pull out the symbols we recognize, read each one in the tradition you choose, and surface any pairings the tradition has notes on. For a full written interpretation by Dylan, see the instant interpretation.

The 2nd-century Greek master of dream interpretation. Artemidorus collected thousands of dreams and tracked which ones came true under which circumstances. His rule: a symbol's meaning depends on who is dreaming it, what they hope for, and what is happening in their waking life.

We'll match the symbols below from your text. Plural forms are OK.

Each symbol — Artemidorus

  • death

    the dreamer's condition

If favorable: To dream of your own death often foretells liberation from an old role and the beginning of a new one.

If shadowed: The death of a beloved in a dream is sometimes a literal warning; the augur Artemidorus advised the dreamer to write to that person at once.

  • snake

    creatures, instincts

If favorable: A serpent that does not strike signals wealth from an unexpected quarter, and especially the recovery of a sick person.

If shadowed: A serpent that bites foretells a hidden enemy, particularly one in the family.

  • horse

    creatures, instincts

If favorable: A horse you ride well signals a journey or honor; a white horse marks a notable companion.

If shadowed: A horse that throws the rider warns against pride in standing.
